We have a 16 week old purebred yellow lab that we purchased from a breeder in Perris. She has attended at 6 week puppy kindergarten at the local parks & rec., and has learned to sit, on command mostly, still need to push her behind down sometimes. She jumps on everyone and nips and tries to bite my legs and feet. She also chews on the door, the porch, the outdoor lighting and all my potted plants are destroyed. When you walk her, she pulls, and jumps and carries the leash in her mouth. DO you think there is any hope that she can be trained to behave? I try to walk her every day, and that tires her out some, but she is very rambunctious. I think it is her breed and her age, but I know she needs to learn the basics and the group kindergarten did not seem to help. I think she was too young.
Any advice?
Peggy Karavanich

When I first got my doberman mix, Kona, I knew when she got old enough she would have to learn some obedience. I couldn't wait to enroll her in a class. And now that she's about to graduate her novice obediene course, I can't tell you how proud I am of her! It has totally changed her life aa well as mine. She is such a joy to walk, unlike before, and in addition to basic obedience, I have tought her many fun tricks. After she graduates, I will be enrolling her in Beginning Agility mid-January. I think she will find it a lot of fun! Thanks a bunch, DSU!

We've been 'students' of Dog Services Unlimited since May 2000. I can't say enough about our wonderful, positive, productive experiences with your organization.

We have had Mairene Matthews as our instructor for all the various classes; basic obedience, good citizen and drill, which we have taken with our 'kids' Kena and Scruffy.

Mairene is absolutely the best.

If we arrive 'late' to class, Kena gets very upset and needs to go and get her 'hugs and love' from Mairene. This is truly special, since Kena is a Shar Pei--Pit Bull mix and doesn't warm up easily to people. She not only loves Mairene, but more importantly, respects her.

I am a true believer in 'continuing education' for our four-legged 'kids'. They really continuously improve from the exposure of being with all the other dogs, people, and the various challenges each class brings. Also, I always learn something new each session which helps me continue to be a good 'Mom'.

Sincerely,
Kena and Scruffy's Mom, Lela

Good morning...
I have a Rottweiler/shepard/chow mix female, 3 years old, that we got from the pound. I believe she is mostly Rott.
She has been well trained as far as sitting, laying down, shaking, but she is aggressive towards other dogs. I now have a click collar (the remote control collar that zaps her if I click the remote control). That has helped with her wanting to charge after every dog she sees, We also have a Samoyed, male, 2 years old, that she gets along with.(she argured a little at first when we brought him home) They are now best friends. My problem is: we also have 2 small dogs. both chihuahuas, both females. She seems to get along with them fine most of the time, except once in awhile, she will pick my smallest one up and shake her. I believe she thinks my little dog is a toy for her to play with. I know she could really hurt her if she really wanted to.
Do you think she could be trained to leave my little dogs alone???? We now have them seperated but it is upsetting the whole house hold...We also have a few cats and she does not bother them at all.

Our dogs LOVE going to Dog Services school! Kena has been through obedience, good citizen, and two drill classes. Scruffy, has been through obedience, twice.

In every class, we have learned something new and valuable to help us teach our 'kids' how to be better canine citizens.

Our instructor, Mairene Matthews, is wonderful!!!

We are looking forward to being 'back in school' in October with both dogs.

Keep up the good work!

My "Toby" was found wondering the streets and brought home by a man who just had too many dogs, so he called my Vet, who in turned call me. He needed alot of work. Rose came to the house, then I enrolled him in a class given by Ginger. We repeated the class for his "social" skills at Gingers suggestion. Toby is ready for the next step! He has made such strides! Thank you all! We plan on continuing our education and purhaps become a Therapy Dog! With all your help, Toby is a much happier dog!

Sandy our Lab puppy started taking Dog Obedience from Paul at 4 mos. old, she continued until 6 mos. old. She loved going to class and really enjoyed the homework. We took a month off school and she really misses the class and her friends. We are going to jump back in this session and get into Grad-Novice next session. We would like to continue obedience and compete in trials. If you have any advice for a Novice trying to get into Obedience Trials would you please email me with the info? Thanks so much!

My first dog to take lessons through Dog Services won his first blue ribbon (at a puppy match) just 2 weeks after completing Novice lessons.

Gaeton, my Newfoundland puppy, completed his Novice lessons, won his first blue ribbon at a puppy match, then he won a 2nd and a 3rd at the Regional Specialty!

It's wonderful to have a well-trained and well-behaved dog, and I credit the obedience lessons for this.

I've learned how smart he is and how much more enriching the experience is if you put a little time and effort into training your dog. This is my second dog but first trained and wow! what a difference. I look forward to trying the Agility and Good Citizen Class. Thanks again Judy.

I have a year old female Shar pei-pit bull mix, and I signed up for the July 11,2000 Novice Obedience Class. It was the BEST experience! From the first class (without our four-leg family member) to the final test class, Kena and I learned so much. Even learning to put the 'training collar' on correctly! Our instructor Mairene Matthews was great! She demonstrated patience, caring, understanding and true love for teaching the classes. She, also, encouraged us, took extra time and effort before and after class when anyone needed extra assistance. Furthermore, under her encouragement and guidence, Kena (Mom, too) took and passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen class. I highly recommend and endorse your training program. Sincerely, Kena's Mom, Lela
